So here’s the quick and dirty (actually just long and unorganized) rundown on what’s been going on in my life the past month or so.

I dropped out of school. Hopefully not permanently, but it was something I had to do. Basically, an extreme curveball was thrown at my life. I was more or less promised in-state tuition at school this year, which would have been easily covered by federal loans. After I got to school this fall, I enrolled and regularly attended classes. I had my RA job set in place to cover living expenses and then some. I was making friends and working hard all the way up until the day I got my bill for the semester. I was being charged out of state tuition (roughly $11,000 more than in-state). When I went to the office of financial aid and scholarships, I was told that the information I was given regarding receiving in-state tuition was wrong, and that I would have to come up with the money to cover the difference or withdraw from classes for the semester. Withdrawing from classes would cause me to have to leave my job in the dorms, which would render me jobless, homeless, and hopeless.

I’ve since then relocated to Dallas and am staying with friends free-of-charge. Although sleeping in the corner of a living room on an air mattress is a less-than-ideal situation, I’m extremely grateful for the luck that I’ve had. I’ve had a roof over my head and received no pressure to find any other housing arrangements until next semester, when I plan to officially apply for Texas residency and therefore receive in-state tuition.

I found work as soon as I could. In retrospect, it was a terrible experience, but I worked for a rich old man for two weeks filing paperwork for an insurance settlement over a burned down property and doing some light housework. He was demeaning and irritable, and he had bad breath and an anger problem. I made a surprising amount of money during those two weeks though, so I quit and kept looking for a more stable employer.

A few weeks ago, I ate lunch with my roommate and a group of people who go to his church and explained the situation to some of them during the conversation. One woman asked for my resume and told me that she worked for a major corporation, had a high-standing position in her division, and would see if she could find me work. She did. A few days later I received a call that I would be hired as a temporary full-time employee for her company with great pay. I accepted the job and if all goes according to plan, I’ll be working until at least January, if not later.

Despite my life literally falling to pieces in the course of a few days, I’m amazed how things work out in the end. I was downtrodden and defeated this time last month, with a dim outlook ok the future. In that time I’ve managed to find a place to live, a wonderful job, a car, new friends, a bright outlook on what’s to come, and confidence that no matter how bleak things seem, it’s possible to turn your life around with a little bit of hard work and optimism. I now have a pep in my step and I’m ready for whatever crazy events life has to throw at me.

This is what it looks like when a water main bursts in the middle of your campus.

Or what it looks like when a main walkway turns into a shoe-eating river.

This is a very boring story. So my laptop has had a difficult week. I don’t know what exactly happened, but it started around Tuesday night when I clicked what looked like a news video on my facebook wall. When I woke up the next morning, my laptop was frozen. It was a little out of the ordinary, but I didn’t think anything of it. The same thing happened a couple times during the day, but I just ignored it and went about my business. It wasn’t until I wasn’t able to access any email websites including yahoo, hotmail, gmail, outlook and msn when I began to get suspicious. Every other website was perfectly accessible. Facebook didn’t seem to want to load, either. I researched some Mac virus removal procedures and installed a couple of recommended programs to try and solve the problem once and for all. With the first scan, the programs recognized two Trojan viruses, so I promptly deleted them. Problem solved, right? Not exactly. The next sweep through of the scan left me once again with a frozen computer. And again. And again. I couldn’t get the scanner to scan the entirety of my hard drive. I started getting even more worried. Next thing I know, my computer won’t even start up. Fortunately, I had installed Windows on a separate part of my hard drive and was able to sweep up my files onto my external hard drive and save them there. The Windows side seemed to be working fine, too. I installed a virus scanner and scanned the Windows drive. Nothing. Just to make sure, I scanned it again with the same results. When I tried to scan the Mac side, it froze up on me and I was forced to restart my computer.  This time, neither the Windows or Mac side would start up. Panicked, I called Apple support and talked to some dude who wasn’t much help, but he promised to send me instructions on what he thought the solution was (which he never sent. Thanks, Apple support). I left the computer alone for a day and decided to try again this evening. I was unsuccessful in even making contact with a human, let alone solving my problem. Besides, in order to get a person on the line to help me, Apple wanted to charge me $49 that I don’t have. So I went for the last resort and found a friend who had a Mac installation disk. Wiped my entire drive clean, lost some things, have to restore some personal settings to everything. But hey, it works now and that’s all that matters. I’d like to take this time to welcome myself back to tumblr.

This is what Tuesdays look like this semester:

5am - wake up and do all the homework I didn’t do all weekend/ was too tired to do Monday night

9:30am-3:30pm - all of my classes this semester back-to-back

4:00pm-6:00pm - residence hall executives meeting

6:00pm-6:30pm - stuff my face with food

6:30pm - 7:00pm - walk to rehearsal

7:00pm - 10:00pm - rehearsal

10:00pm - 10:30pm - walk home from rehearsal

10:30pm - midnight - stuff my face with food, be annoyed with my roommates loud friends being in my room until 2am, lose my mind

Just finished my last final exam for the semester. Still have a bit of late work to turn in, but that will be a breeze. This entire semester has been a breeze.

I went to the late-night dining hall this evening and helped myself to some tater tots and soda. While I was eating, I heard the kids at a neighboring table talking about Hey, Arnold! and how great it was. Some highlights from their conversation were as follows:
“I only like her. I don’t like her like her. Do you remember that from Hey, Arnold! ?”
“I hated that guy who would like, breath behind Helga on the bus. So annoying”
“Eugene was gay. Eugene was so, totally gay.”
One person: “Remember that kid who wouldn’t leave his stoop?” Rest of table: “…Stoop Kid?”

Breakfast this morning consisted of these organic cheese curl things and orange juice.

My insides are going to turn orange.
